Admissions in data science for the January 2025 batch are now open at IIT Madras. The students can submit their applications by January 02, 2025, and the JEE advanced exam will be conducted on February 23, 2025.
IIT Madras allowed students to enroll in;
- BS in Data Science and Applications
- and a Diploma in Data Science.
Students who have passed their intermediate can apply for the BS program, and university graduates can access IIT Madras for the diploma course in Data Science. BSC degree holders can also apply for their BS program.

IIT Madras Online Courses: Data Science
Eligibility Criteria
College students who have graduated from their 12th class can apply for the BS degree. First-year students can also submit their applications, but they can join the class after completing their intermediate.
You are eligible to apply for admission if you have passed your matriculation with math and English as the main subjects.
IIT Madras set two criteria for the admission;
- Those who have passed the JEE advanced paper
- Or via the regular entry.
If you can appear in this year’s JEE advanced exam, you can directly apply to foundation-level courses at IIT Madras Data Science program. You must complete watching hours and submit the first 4 weeks’ assignments. There will be an in-person 4-hour quiz that you must pass for the next program.
Who can apply?
If you are applying to a data science program after completing your intermediate, you first need to enroll in the qualifier paper. It will last four weeks, and students must pass two assessments out of three to achieve the required score.
The general category sets a 40% required percentage, while SC/ST/PwD with 40% disability need to secure 30% marks. PwD with 40% disability required 30%, and OBC-NCL/EWS percentage is 35%.
Fee Structure for BS Data Science
As we all know, the IIT Madras degree program is divided into four levels;
- Foundation level
- Diploma level
- Degree level BSc
- Degree level BS
Here is the fee structure for each course;
- The foundation level applicants must pay INR 32,000, while the foundation plus one diploma stage has an INR 94,500 fee.
- Foundation with two diplomas, students will pay INR 1,57,000, BSc degree holders will submit INR 2,21,000 – 2,27,000, and BS degree applicants are asked to submit INR 3,15,000 – 3,51,000 fees.
Application Form Fee
- The General/OBC form fee is INR 3,000, while SC/ST/PwD with 40% or more disability application forms have a fee of INR 1,500.
- SC/ST who are also PwD with 40% or more disability must pay INR 750.
Syllabus of BS Data Science
- IIT Madras’s online degree program has three levels, and you must complete all three to earn your Data Science and Applications BS degree.
- The institution can exit at any stage, so the certification criteria will be changed accordingly.
- The duration criteria for the BS is 3-6 years, and you will be engaged 10 hours per week.
- After every 4 months, the institution will conduct end-term papers, including 3 quizzes, after completing 12 weeks of their coursework.
- First, students will be engaged in 8 different courses to proceed to the diploma course. Next, they will complete all diploma-level courses to get registered for degree-level courses.
- You can complete the video lectures virtually, but the endpapers will be held physically in different centers.
Fee Structure for Diploma in Data Science
- The application fee for the General/OBC category is INR 6,000.
- The SC/ST/PwD category aspirants need to pay INR 3,000.
- The SC/ST, who are also PwD, will pay INR 1,500 fee.
- The foundational level sets the INR 4,000 fee per course.
- If enrolling in skill enhancement courses, you must pay INR 5,000 for each course.
- Other courses include INR 10,000 per course.
Syllabus of Diploma in Data Science
- The diploma courses consist of 8 months, and students will submit their end-term exams after each 4 months.
- There are 4 courses, and Mathematics and Statistics for Data Science II are mandatory in the first term.
- Video lectures will be delivered virtually. However, papers will be conducted physically.
Requirements for International Students
IIT Madras online courses in data science welcome all students worldwide to participate in their thrilling courses. Currently, the institution is conducting physical papers in UAE – Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Sri Lanka – Colombo, Jaffna, Bahrain – Manama, Kuwait – Salmiya, and Oman – Muscat. However, further arrangements are being considered for the physical papers of international students. Students from other countries apart from these can remotely access proctored exams.
