One such story that deeply impacted Andhra Pradesh and the nation has seen a new turn this time from the highest court of the land. The state government of Andhra Pradesh has now told the Supreme Court that it has officially closed the case filed against Sunitha Narreddy, the daughter of slain former MP YS Vivekananda Reddy, and CBI officer Ram Singh.
A Family Torn Apart by Tragedy
Vivekananda Reddy, a senior leader and the uncle of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, was found brutally murdered at his residence in Pulivendula, Kadapa district, in March 2019. His death shook not just his family but the entire political landscape of Andhra Pradesh, especially because it occurred just weeks before the 2019 assembly elections. The timing alone raised suspicions of political motives, and the case quickly turned into one of the most high-profile criminal investigations in the state.
From State CID to CBI: The Long Road of Investigation
Initially, the state’s Crime Investigation Department (CID) took up the investigation, but amid increasing pressure and public demand, the case was transferred to the CBI in July 2020. The CBI later filed its chargesheet in October 2021, followed by a supplementary chargesheet in January 2022. Yet, the mystery deepened, and the case continued to evolve with new twists that no one saw coming.
A New FIR, Old Accusations, and Shocking Allegations
In a strange turn of events during the YSRCP government’s rule, an FIR was registered against Sunitha Narreddy and CBI officer Ram Singh. The complaint came from M V Krishna Reddy, the former personal assistant of the slain MP, who was himself under CBI investigation. He alleged that he was confined in a guesthouse near Kadapa’s central prison and was forced to make false statements implicating others, allegedly at Sunitha Narreddy’s behest.
In December 2023, acting on his complaint, a local magistrate in Pulivendula directed the police to register a fresh FIR against Sunitha and others. This move shocked many, especially since Sunitha had been one of the most vocal voices demanding justice for her father. She had stood with courage, faced media glare, and fought legal battles, hoping to unearth the truth behind the murder of her father.
Supreme Court Closes the Chapter
The legal battle reached the Supreme Court after the Andhra Pradesh High Court dismissed the plea of the CBI officer and Sunitha to quash the FIR in May 2024. However, during the recent hearing, the Andhra Pradesh government informed the bench, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, that the case had been reviewed and a closure report had already been filed in a local court.
The Supreme Court took note of the submission and said there was no reason to continue hearing the appeal. As the Chief Justice stated, “The special leave petition is dismissed as withdrawn.”
A Case That Still Hurts Many
Even though this chapter may have come to a technical close, the emotional wounds remain open. The murder of a respected leader, the accusations against his own family, the political crossfire, and the delayed pursuit of truth have all left behind a trail of sorrow and confusion. For many, especially those close to the Reddy family, closure doesn’t come with a court report; it comes with truth, which they still yearn for.
