DHFL Scam: Supreme Court to Decide the Fate of Dheeraj Wadhawan’s Bail

DHFL scam (Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd) promoter Dheeraj Wadhawan and his brother Kapil Wadhawan are accused of embezzling ₹ 34,000 crore. According to the CBI, these two brothers misused a loan of ₹ 42,871.42 crore from 17 banks, transferred it to companies under their control and defrauded the banking system. The case started with a complaint from the Union Bank of India (UBI), after which the CBI started the investigation. The Wadhawan brothers were arrested in July 2022, but the trial court granted them bail in December 2022.

Supreme Court sent them to jail again

In January 2024, the Supreme Court overturned the High Court’s decision and ordered the re-arrest of Dheeraj and Kapil Wadhawan. The court held that the CBI had filed the chargesheet in time and there was no basis to release the Wadhawan brothers. However, Dheeraj Wadhawan sought bail on medical grounds in May 2023, which was rejected by the trial court. He then moved to the Delhi High Court, from where he got medical bail in September 2024. Now the CBI has filed a petition in the Supreme Court that Dheeraj Wadhawan is completely healthy and his medical bail should be cancelled. The CBI claims that the 45-year-old Wadhawan does not have any serious illness and he has obtained bail by getting fake medical reports made from private hospitals.
