Hello friends, Maintaining transparency and impartiality in the judiciary is a big responsibility, and in this direction, the Supreme Court Collegium has taken an important decision. The Supreme Court has recommended sending Justice Atul Shridharan back to his parent Madhya Pradesh High Court. This decision has been taken to maintain the balance of judicial dignity and family commitments.
Justice Atul Shridharan’s Homecoming
Justice Atul Shridharan, who is currently serving as a judge in the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, will soon serve in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The Supreme Court Collegium recommended his reappointment in a meeting held on 6 March 2025. Justice Shridharan started his career in 1992 and also served under the country’s eminent senior advocate Gopal Subramaniam. Later, he practised independently in Delhi and Indore and showed his expertise in various government and private cases.
The decision to transfer was taken due to family reasons
Justice Atul Shridharan was appointed a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on 7 April 2016. But at the beginning of the year 2023, he requested to transfer himself from the Madhya Pradesh High Court. There was a personal reason behind this daughter. His elder daughter had recently entered the world of advocacy and was going to practice in the Indore High Court and the District Court. The father and daughter practising in the same court could have created a situation of potential conflict of interest. To maintain the dignity and impartiality of the judiciary, he requested a transfer to the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, which was approved by the Supreme Court Collegium on 28 March 2023.
Now will deliver justice in Madhya Pradesh again
Now, after almost two years, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended his return to his original High Court. This decision has been taken not only keeping in mind his family situation but also to ensure that he can fulfil his obligation to provide justice in his home state.
What does this decision say?
This decision further strengthens the principle of the Indian judiciary, which places transparency, impartiality and ethics paramount. This move of Justice Sridharan also shows how a judge should be cautious to strike a balance between his professional and family responsibilities.
