Supreme Court’s comment on bail

The Supreme Court bench, while considering the matter, said that Christian Michel has been in custody for more than six years and the investigation continued during this time. The court also said that the CBI has filed two charge sheets and a supplementary charge sheet against Michel, on the basis of which it was decided to grant him bail. During this, the court also raised the question of why the hearing of this scam case is going on for such a long time. Justice Mehta even said, “If you continue in this manner, then this case will not be over for 25 years.”

What was the AgustaWestland helicopter scam?

In this case, the CBI had alleged that AgustaWestland had committed a scam to buy 12 VVIP helicopters from the Government of India. In this deal, an amount of about 556.262 million euros was transacted, in which the Indian treasury suffered a loss of about Rs 2,666 crore.

What is the allegation of CBI and ED?

Alleging money laundering in this case, the ED said that Christian Michel had received 30 million euros (about Rs 225 crore) from AgustaWestland. All these are allegations of corruption and fraud, which have been levelled due to causing loss to the treasury of the Indian government.

Bail conditions

The Supreme Court has ordered Christian Michel to be granted bail but has also placed some conditions along with it. The court has directed him to renew his passport and then surrender it to the court after bail. Apart from this, Michel’s lawyer Aljo K Joseph had appealed to the court to grant him bail, which was approved by the court.
