Hello friends, The controversy over Rahul Gandhi citizenship is deepening once again. The Delhi High Court has sought a response from the central government on this issue. The petition filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy states that Rahul Gandhi had taken British citizenship, which raises questions about his Indian citizenship. In this case, the court has directed the central government to tell what action has been taken on Swamy’s complaint.
What is the whole matter?
Subramanian Swamy wrote a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2019 alleging that Rahul Gandhi had described himself as a British citizen before the British government. This claim goes against Article 9 of the Indian Constitution and the Indian Citizenship Act. Swamy says that he has sought a response from the Home Ministry several times in this matter, but no concrete action has been taken so far. According to the petition filed in the High Court, the Home Ministry had sent a letter to Rahul Gandhi in April 2019 seeking clarification. He was asked to respond within two weeks, but it is not yet clear what decision the government took after this letter.
What happened in the court?
During the hearing on Wednesday, the Delhi High Court sought a response from the central government and scheduled the next hearing of the case for March 26. The court also clarified that under this petition, it is only looking at what steps the Home Ministry has taken on Swamy’s complaint. During the hearing, S. Vignesh Shishir, a BJP worker from Karnataka, said that he had also filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court on the same issue. He said that the central government has already told the Allahabad High Court that it is in the process of taking a final decision on this matter. On this, the Delhi High Court said that the matter being pending in the Allahabad High Court does not prevent the hearing of the petition in the Delhi High Court.
What will happen next?
Now the next hearing of this case will be on March 26, where the central government will have to tell what action it has taken on Subramanian Swamy’s complaint. It will be interesting to see what stand the government takes in this matter and whether any new revelations are made regarding Rahul Gandhi citizenship.
