In a recent development, the Supreme Court of India has come to the rescue of the innocent deer at the Deer Park in Hauz Khas, New Delhi. The top court has taken a stand to prevent the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and other authorities from relocating the remaining deer from the park to forests in other states. This decision has been hailed by animal rights activists and concerned citizens, as it aims to ensure the well-being of these gentle creatures.

The Concerns Raised by the NGO

The matter reached the Supreme Court after the New Delhi Nature Society, an NGO, filed a plea raising serious concerns about the relocation of around 600 deer from the park. The society claimed that the relocation was being carried out hastily and without adequate preparation. They pointed out that there was no proper assessment of the habitats where the deer were being moved, no veterinary checks on the animals, and no safeguards in place to protect vulnerable groups, such as pregnant deer and fawns.

This alarmed the public, as it was feared that such a sudden move could harm the deer. The park in Hauz Khas had been their home for years, and a sudden change in environment could have devastating consequences for their health and survival. Furthermore, the plea also highlighted that three batches of deer had already been relocated in the past, to sanctuaries in Rajasthan, in what the NGO claimed was a violation of wildlife protection laws. The lack of proper care and assessments during these relocations was a major concern.

The Supreme Court Intervention

Recognising the gravity of the situation, the Supreme Court stepped in to protect the animals. The bench, led by Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan, issued a direction to the DDA and other concerned authorities to halt any further relocation efforts for now. The court emphasised that the remaining deer in the park must be properly cared for and looked after, ensuring their well-being.

In its order, the Supreme Court  stated, “For the time being, we restrain the respondents from shifting the existing deer out of the Deer Park.” This temporary halt will remain in effect until further proceedings, with a response from the authorities due by May 16, 2025. The court’s decision is a victory for those who believe that the deer deserve a safe and secure environment.

A Glimmer of Hope for the Deer

This decision by the Supreme Court brings hope to the deers of Hauz Khas Deer Park, who now have a fighting chance to remain in their familiar surroundings. The court’s intervention ensures that the authorities cannot act hastily, and it also sets a precedent for the protection of wildlife in urban spaces. It highlights the importance of following proper procedures when dealing with animals and their habitats.

With the Supreme Court order, the future of these deer now seems brighter. Their care and well-being are in the hands of the authorities, who must now ensure that they receive the attention and protection they deserve.

A Step in the Right Direction
