The High Court has asked the state government whether it is ready to make the necessary changes in it. The division bench of the High Court, consisting of Justice Manoj Tiwari and Justice Ashish Nathani, asked this question to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. During the hearing, Tushar Mehta appeared in court through video conferencing. Earlier also, the High Court had given six weeks to the Central and State Governments to respond to another petition related to the Uniform Civil Code.

Why the controversy over a live-in relationship?

The petitioners argued that the information sought in the registration form made for live-in relationships under the Uniform Civil Code violates the privacy of the people. According to him, due to this information, the police will have all the information of live-in couples, so that they can reach their house and interfere in their personal life.

New rules for women are also under question

The petitions also said that according to a provision of the Uniform Civil Code, if a woman wants to end a live-in relationship, she will have to declare her pregnancy status. This rule can affect the freedom and privacy of women.

All petitions will be heard together. The High Court decided that all the petitions filed against the Uniform Civil Code will be combined and the next hearing of this case will be on April 1. The court also clarified that the police cannot harass any citizen, because it is just a machinery of the state, and does not have the right to interfere in personal matters. Now it will be interesting to see what stand the Uttarakhand government takes on this and whether changes will be made to the Uniform Civil Code or not.
